A 4-day youth development camp, based at a cattle station near Mareeba, set next to a picturesque river…with no phone service! This camp has been carefully thought out, from the location selection to the activities included.
The influence of town life and technology on youth is outstanding. We don’t want to discourage the use of technology, but rather learn the balance between it and the outdoors.
At our youth camps, they will learn important bush skills, making it easier for them to be in nature. We teach them firelighting skills and bush safety and first aid. They will engage in team building exercises to build their understanding of how important accepting help and working as a team is. They will set goals and help cook on the fire and clean. We will teach meditation in multiple formats, including standard meditation, yoga and…archery (Rossy has 20 years experience). We also teach photography, as it is a great bridge between nature and technology!
But the highlight, is the 24hr Survivor Day! Youth are given credits to which they can use to purchase ‘items’ to take away on an overnight camp challenge in supervised groups. Each group has an experienced bushie and first aider. These challenging experiences often re-establish comfort zones and the growth from them is astonishing!
All itineraries are subject to change due to weather, road conditions, unexpected circumstances or driver’s decision based on what is best for the group. This itinerary is ONLY a guide. Whilst an itinerary is important, at Cockatours, we believe being flexible and having the ability to explore and deviate is also incredibly important.

Our youth & leadership development camps aim to provide youth and young adults with an extremely valuable opportunity to disconnect our busy everyday lives and the overwhelming nature of life in the 21st century. At these camps, we use some technology (no phone service) to bridge the gap with nature. We encourage everyone to embrace the bush and the opportunities for learning and rejuvenation it provides. We aim to help develop future leaders, build confidence, strengthen morals and refresh their energy for their life and their future!
Activities include:
Our 15-seater tour truck, Zeus, takes us on all our adventures. He is equipped with very comfortable seating perfect for off-road driving, a sound system with microphones for those who love karaoke and plenty of storage. The air-conditioning works extremely well and the tinted windows in the cab help keep the glare & heat out! Our trailer is our portable kitchen with even more storage which is perfect for any event; short/long term camping trips, weekend getaways, the list goes on! There’s even a large awning for those rare rainy days!
On camping tours, we take a maximum of 15 people and there is a fridge for clients in the trailer for your own snacks and drinks!
We are very particular about a few things that make a trip comfortable; good food and sleeping gear are two of those.
Our single or duo tents are 6.5 ft high, very spacious and easy to put up. The fly can also be removed, making it a big mozzie dome, for those starry nights so you can watch the stars go over head!
The mattresses are high-quality, high-density dunlop foam mattresses that stack (not rollable) and are comfy! We have sheets and micro-fibre blankets (NO yucky sleeping bags) for bedding and a mattress case as well. The pillows are real pillows and are covered with hygienic pillow covers as well as a standard pillow case. We even supply bath mats for the front of your tent! The chairs and mattresses vary between trucks due to storage space.
We have provided a handy camping checklist for you to help with your preparations. This list was built from suggestions from past clients!
*Note: this was developed for the 15-17 day tours, but may be helpful for youth camps as well.
